About
Barcelona
Barcelona, a city
of one and a half million people, is certainly the most
cosmopolitan and economically most active city in this
country. It has always proved its will to be modern, to
follow the latest international tendencies or be ahead
of them. In a privileged position on the northeastern
coast of the Iberian peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean,
Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in both
size and population.
Barcelona´s location on the shores means that Catalan
enjoy a temperate and pleasant climate most of the year
and this climate makes a large contribution to the high
quality of life of its citizens.
It is also the capital of Catalonia, 1 of the 17 Autonomous
Communities that make up Spain. There are two official
languages spoken in Barcelona: Catalan, generally spoken
in all of Catalonia, and Castillian Spanish. The Catalonian
landscape is very varied.
The Pyrenee
mountains contrast strongly with the coastal
regions, although the pleasant quality is generalised.
Catalonia is a very pleasant to live in. One look at life
expectancy figures shows that the Catalans are among the
longest living in the world. Their secret is a combination
of good environmental conditions, a healthy diet,
good health and social services and a life style in which,
despite the hard work, one always finds time for leisure.
The Catalans have always placed a high value on work and
have distinguished themselves with their capacity for
improvisation. This has allowed Catalonia to grow into
a solidly structured region, with a well developed civil
society and an active work culture.Barcelona´s Old
city is, without doubt one of the nicest and most romantic
of Europe. Its small streets, little shops, everything
invites you to wander around, getting to know every place
of this charming area.
(Barrio
Gótico)The Barcelona that spread outside
the old city walls, with the creation of the Passeig de
Gràcia and the Eixample and the absorption of other
towns and villages of the plain of Barcelona, is today
the true centre of the city. Here is the commercial and
public centre, whose backbone is the Rambla,
and the business and financial centre, above all in the
Diagonal area. This part of the city has a very functional
layout, with regular blocks that facilitate the movement
of traffic.
The Metro
and a very comprehensive system of buses link the various
parts of the city.Barcelona has been a center of Modernist
architecture and is distinguished specially by the works
of genial Antoní
Gaudí, who together with his great contemporaries
gave new and exciting looks to it, but has remained since
then at the top of modernity.Barcelona is a bustling city
and one which is ethnically very varied.
You will never bebored in Barcelona, whether you are interested
in art and culture,
a beach lover or just simply like to shop, there is something
for everyone here.
Barcelona offers lots of cultural, commercial and sporting
activities: concerts, opera,
theatre, museums,
good
restaurants, shops
etc...A city over-flowing with people, life and enchantment
is waiting for you.
